Ghana explores maritime cooperation with US after Port of Philadelphia engagement

Ghana has begun discussions on expanding maritime and trade cooperation with the United States following a high-level working visit to the Port of Philadelphia by senior government officials.

The delegation, which included the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, toured key operational areas of the port and received briefings on logistics systems, infrastructure, and its role within global supply chains.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Victor Smith, said efficient port systems remain central to the country’s export ambitions, particularly for value-added products.

“Modern and efficient ports are critical to expanding Ghana’s exports, especially cocoa and cocoa-derived products, and to improving value addition and competitiveness in global markets,” he said.

Minister Gomashie said Ghana’s interest in the engagement aligns with the country’s broader blue economy agenda, with attention on sectors that can support sustainable economic growth.

“Ghana is committed to developing its blue economy, with particular interest in maritime tourism, fisheries, coastal development, and marine-related industries that can drive sustainable economic growth,” she said.

She added that exposure to advanced port systems such as Philadelphia’s could provide useful insights for Ghana’s own plans to modernise maritime infrastructure and unlock new opportunities.

The visit forms part of Ghana’s ongoing economic diplomacy efforts aimed at strengthening trade relations, attracting investment, and improving cooperation in logistics and maritime development. Both sides have agreed to continue engagements and explore practical areas of collaboration.
