As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its 31 January presidential primaries, one candidate whose name has re-emerged on the national stage is Kwabena Agyei Agyepong — an experienced engineer and long-time party operative.
While some Ghanaian voters may recognise him from NPP internal politics, there are several facets of his life and career that many may not know.
1. He comes from a family marked by national tragedy
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was born on 6 March 1962 in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. He is the son of Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, one of three Ghanaian judges who were abducted and murdered during the early years of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era — a painful chapter in Ghana’s judicial history that helped shape his lifelong commitment to justice and the rule of law.
2. He is a trained civil engineer with broad professional experience
Before entering frontline politics, Agyepong trained as a civil engineer, earning a BSc in Civil Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He worked with the Ghana Highway Authority in quality control and materials engineering before co-founding his own firm, Constro Consult Limited, an engineering consultancy involved in major infrastructure projects.
3. He has deep roots in NPP politics dating back to 1992
Agyepong’s involvement with the NPP predates Ghana’s Fourth Republic. He was active in the party’s campaigns in the 1990s, including roles in the 1992 and 1996 presidential bids, and later supported John Agyekum Kufuor’s successful campaigns in 2000 and 2004. His long service underscores a political life spent largely behind the scenes and in organisational roles before seeking the presidential nomination himself.
4. He once led the NPP as General Secretary, but faced internal disputes
In 2014, Agyepong was elected General Secretary of the NPP, one of the party’s top administrative positions. However, his tenure was marked by internal challenges amid factional tensions, including his suspension from the role in 2015 during a turbulent period for party leadership. Despite that setback, he remained loyal and continued working for the party’s success.
5. His 2026 campaign emphasises “unity, discipline and renewal”
Unlike some aspirants whose focus is heavily on public visibility, Agyepong’s bid for the flagbearer position — branded the “New Dawn Agenda” — is anchored on restoring discipline, meritocracy and internal cohesion within the NPP. His campaign platform highlights structural reforms such as land policy overhaul, fiscal discipline, youth empowerment and professionalising public service, positioning him as a candidate for organisational renewal.
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong’s story offers an alternative profile in the crowded NPP field — one grounded in long-term party loyalty, organisational experience, and professional expertise. As delegates prepare to vote, understanding the depth of his background helps contextualise why he labels his bid a campaign for renewal and unity within the party.
