Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has cautioned that inflammatory campaign rhetoric and personal attacks among contenders risk deepening divisions within the party and undermining its chances of returning to power.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (23 January) with just eight days to the NPP’s presidential primaries, Agyepong said some aspirants had crossed “red lines” with statements that could haunt the party long after the contest.
“We are five candidates of the same political party. One of us will win and we must market that person to the country,” he said. “But words are powerful. There are certain things you say that you cannot take back.”
Although welcoming the recent unity pact signed by the aspirants, the former NPP General Secretary argued it came “a fraction too late,” noting that earlier conduct had already strained relationships among some contenders.
Agyepong said he had deliberately run what he described as the “cleanest campaign,” avoiding personal attacks and focusing on leadership credentials, a stance he said had earned him praise from academics, civil society groups and media professionals.
He warned that the stakes of the primary extended beyond internal party competition, stressing that failure to present a unifying and credible candidate could leave the NPP in opposition for as long as 12 years.
“This election is not just about electing a candidate,” he said. “It is about searching for the soul of the NPP.”
