The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) has arrested a fourth and key suspect in connection with the Wapuli kidnapping case, marking what police describe as a major breakthrough in efforts to dismantle the criminal syndicate.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, the Police said the suspect, identified as Hoyeefe Amadu, was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, at about 1:30 a.m., following weeks of intensive surveillance and intelligence-led operations.
The arrest follows an earlier operation on 6 December 2025, during which PID officers rescued a 42-year-old man who had been abducted in Wapuli, a community in the Northern Region. That operation led to the arrest of three suspects, believed to be members of a four-man kidnapping syndicate.
According to the Police, the victim sustained life-threatening cutlass wounds during captivity. The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of GHC100,000, but collected GHC90,000 before releasing the victim. Police later retrieved GHC70,000 of the ransom.
Following the rescue, officers continued intelligence gathering and a manhunt for the remaining suspect, culminating in the arrest of Amadu at a hideout in a village about 10 kilometres from Watugu, a suburb of Gushegu.
The three earlier suspects have since been remanded into prison custody and are expected to reappear in court as investigations continue.
The Police say they remain committed to combating kidnapping and organised crime in the region, and have assured the public of continued operations to ensure the safety and security of residents.
