A youth group in the Ashanti Region has declared support for two contenders of Asante origin in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential race ahead of the party’s primaries on 31 January.
The group, Asante Concerned Youth Association, said it was backing former education minister Yaw Osei Adutwum and former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, urging party delegates to rally behind candidates from the region.
Ashanti record
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi on Tuesday, the group’s president, Nyamekye Ebenezer, said the endorsement was based on what he described as the Ashanti Region’s development record under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, an Asante.
“The Ashanti Region witnessed massive development under President Kufuor, including major infrastructure projects,” Nyamekye said, citing the Asokwa and Sofoline interchanges as well as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Emergency Centre.
He said the group believed an Asante candidate could again unite the party and improve its electoral fortunes.
“We believe that if the party elects a candidate from this region, he will serve the nation well and bring more development to Ashanti and Ghana as a whole,” he said.
Nyamekye said two Asante natives were currently in the race and urged delegates to assess their track records.
“The delegates should decide among these two who served Ashanti Region and Ghana best. The one they believe performed well deserves their support,” he said.
Tribal politics?
Responding to suggestions that the group’s position amounted to tribalism, Nyamekye rejected the claim.
“This is not about tribalism. This is about supporting your own,” he said, adding that the association had taken similar positions in past political contests.
The NPP, Ghana’s main opposition party, is selecting a presidential candidate to lead it into the next general election.
Five senior party figures are contesting the race, underscoring growing internal competition.
