Coalition of unpaid teachers demand payment of 25 months salary arrears

The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has renewed calls on the government to immediately pay their outstanding 25 months salary arrears, describing the situation as unfair and deeply distressing.

The affected teachers, mainly from the 2023 recruitment cohort, say they have continued to work under the Ghana Education Service without pay, despite repeated assurances that their concerns would be addressed.

Addressing a press conference in Tamale, the coalition expressed frustration over what they described as prolonged neglect by authorities despite several appeals for the regularisation of their appointments.

According to the group, repeated engagements with GES have yielded no tangible results, leaving them uncertain about their future in the service.

The teachers identified the delay in the issuance of staff IDs and what they termed a “ghost” financial clearance as major factors affecting their morale and commitment to teaching. They explained that the situation has made it difficult for them to report to classrooms consistently, as they struggle to meet basic living expenses without salaries.

The coalition further revealed that many of its members have lost credibility in their communities after failing to repay debts owed to creditors, a situation they attribute to the government’s inability to pay their monthly salaries.

They said the prolonged non-payment has pushed several members into financial distress.
Reading a statement on behalf of the group, the Convenor, Ali Nathan, accused authorities of deliberately delaying the release of staff IDs to suppress potential protests.

He noted that in March 2025, members were summoned to regional centres, including Tamale, to submit documents at their own expense, only to be informed later that the exercise did not apply to them.

He also recalled that a promised financial clearance announced in October 2025 has yet to materialise for over 250 affected teachers.

The coalition is therefore appealing to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to urgently intervene. They expressed confidence that the minister, a former teacher himself, understands their plight and will act swiftly to resolve the issue, restore their dignity, and bring relief to the affected teachers.
