The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a woman described by community opinion leaders as a major figure in the local drug trade during an anti-narcotics operation in Budumburam and surrounding communities in the Gomoa East Municipality of the Central Region.
The operation, conducted on Friday, 16 January, forms part of NACOC’s nationwide campaign to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Among those arrested was a 32-year-old woman identified as Rebecca Afia Naa Dei Kotei, popularly known as “Mother.” Local opinion leaders described her as a key player in the area’s drug trade who had allegedly evaded arrest in the past.
According to NACOC, the suspect had been under surveillance for some time due to intelligence linking her to the distribution of illicit substances.
“She has been on the radar of NACOC’s intelligence and surveillance team due to her activities in dealing with all manner of illicit drug trafficking acts,” the Commission said in a statement.
The exercise led to the arrest of several suspects believed to be involved in drug peddling and the seizure of quantities of suspected cannabis, tramadol, and other controlled substances. Officers also retrieved items believed to have been used in facilitating the illegal trade.
NACOC disclosed that it had received multiple complaints from residents about criminal activities associated with some of the suspects arrested during the operation.
“The Commission has received several complaints of nefarious activities being perpetuated by most of the suspects who are currently in custody,” it noted.
The suspects are currently in custody to assist with investigations and are expected to be processed in accordance with the law.
NACOC reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations against drug-related crimes nationwide, stressing that it will not relent in efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit drugs.
“NACOC wishes to assure the general public of its commitment to ensure that Ghana becomes a drug-free nation,” the Commission said.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
