Former environment minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has said he has no intention of leaving the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pushing back against moves by party leaders to expel him following his sharp criticism of the party’s leadership and internal processes.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday (13 January) Frimpong-Boateng said factions he described as “fake” within the ruling party were undermining its founding values and should be the ones to leave.
“I am not leaving the party. They should leave the party. They are the fake ones,” he said, adding that he remained committed to what he called the NPP’s original principles.
His comments come after the NPP initiated disciplinary steps against him over remarks in which he described the party as “fake” and alleged that its 2023 presidential primary was manipulated in favour of then Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
Earlier this week, Frimpong-Boateng told Channel One TV that he no longer recognised the current NPP as the party he belonged to, comments that drew swift condemnation from the party’s leadership.
In a statement, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah described the remarks as “highly reprehensible” and inconsistent with the party’s values, rejecting the claims of a rigged primary as unsubstantiated.
He said the party would follow its internal rules in addressing what it considers misconduct.
Frimpong-Boateng, a former minister and one-time presidential aspirant, said his criticisms were motivated by a desire to defend the party’s founding ideals rather than personal ambition, as the dispute deepens tensions within the NPP ahead of upcoming political contests.
