The campaign of Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says its central mission is to dismantle poverty and restore dignity to both ordinary Ghanaians and party members, ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s January 31 flagbearer election.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 January), campaign spokesperson Yaw Opoku Mensah criticised overreliance on macroeconomic indicators such as GDP, inflation, and exchange rates, arguing that they fail to reflect lived realities.
“How many people were lifted out of poverty by the last budget? How many middle-class Ghanaians were created? These are the questions we should be asking,” he said.
Opoku Mensah cited poverty statistics indicating that over 23 per cent of Ghanaians wake up daily uncertain about their next meal, describing poverty as the country’s “worst enemy”.
He said Dr Adutwum’s campaign seeks to place the individual at the heart of governance by creating an enabling environment where talent can thrive, jobs are accessible, and citizens live longer and healthier lives.
As part of this vision, he outlined proposals including the annual training of engineers and medical doctors from every constituency, routine medical check-ups as part of primary healthcare, and stronger investment in technical and STEM education.
The campaign also proposed internal reforms within the NPP, including constituency-based welfare systems, prosperity centres to support entrepreneurs, and clearer accountability between government appointees and party structures.
According to Opoku Mensah, the strong reception Dr Adutwum has received from delegates reflects confidence in his stewardship and a belief that his leadership can reposition the party for victory in 2028.
“This flagbearer election is a make-or-break moment for the NPP. Delegates are looking for a leader who can restore dignity, build opportunity, and give hope to the Ghanaian people,” he said.
