New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential contender Bryan Acheampong has wrapped up a tour of northern Ghana with a rally in the Savannah Region, as his campaign seeks to build momentum in the race to lead the opposition party ahead of the 2028 election.
Acheampong’s tour took him through the Upper West, Upper East, North East, Northern and Savannah regions, areas traditionally seen as strongholds of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, another leading contender in the party’s presidential contest.
In Jirapa, a relative of S.D. Dombo, a founding figure of the NPP’s political tradition, publicly declared support for Acheampong, an endorsement party insiders described as symbolically significant given Dombo’s historical influence in northern Ghana.
Acheampong also drew large crowds in Walewale, the hometown of Bawumia, where supporters chanted his name and delegates praised his organisational strength and prospects of returning the party to power after its 2024 election defeat.
In Saboba, local assembly members endorsed Acheampong, saying his direct engagement with grassroots leaders contrasted with what they described as years of neglect by the party’s national leadership. They linked that disconnect to the NPP’s electoral setbacks and pledged to mobilise support for Acheampong in rural communities.
Similar scenes were reported in parts of the Savannah Region. In Salaga South, a local party official said Acheampong attracted larger crowds than other aspirants who had visited the constituency, particularly among Kokomba supporters, which he said reflected growing grassroots enthusiasm.
Throughout the tour, Acheampong urged party delegates to vote freely, without what he described as pressure or coercion, and promised to stand by them if elected flagbearer. He said his leadership would focus on party unity and rebuilding ahead of the 2028 polls.
Regional party officials echoed that message. Wa East Chairman Sumaila Kankuronye said Acheampong’s long-standing contributions to the party made him a credible choice, while Wa West Chairman Abdulai Seidu described him as a unifying figure capable of leading the NPP back to power.
Acheampong’s campaign said the northern tour marked a turning point, arguing that growing support in the region underscored his appeal beyond traditional factional lines within the party.
