The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over rising crime and declining public safety under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, saying citizens are increasingly living in fear.
Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, speaking on Thursday during an assessment of the government’s first year in office, attributed the deterioration in security to the politicisation of the police and neglect of the wider security sector.
She cited official figures showing that as of July 2025, Ghana recorded about 628-armed robbery cases and 314 murders involving illicit arms in just six months.
“Ghanaians now sleep with one eye open. The security situation has deteriorated, turning our once peaceful nation into one gripped by fear and uncertainty,” Appiagyei said.
“Ghanaians no longer feel safe in their own homes. The duty to safeguard life and property has weakened under politicised policing and neglect of our security services,” she added.
Institutional weakness
Appiagyei also highlighted environmental and economic challenges.
“Illegal mining continues to expand. Our water bodies have been poisoned with mercury and cyanide. Our cocoa farms are destroyed. Our forest reserves are vandalised. The Pra River, Ankobra and Birim increasingly reflect national distress and institutional weakness,” she said.
“As we speak many parts of Accra are without water. When institutions meant to safeguard our environment are subordinated to opaque arrangements, what we witness is not a decisive fight against galamsey, it is a loss of state control,” Appiagyei said.
