France has halted the import of food products containing traces of five pesticides that are already banned within the European Union, the government announced on Wednesday.
The measure prohibits the entry of agricultural products found to contain residues of the listed pesticides, even at trace levels.
French authorities said the decision is intended to strengthen consumer protection and ensure that imported food meets the same standards required of domestic producers.
The move also aims to ease opposition from French farmers to the proposed trade agreement between the European Union and the South American bloc Mercosur, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Farmers have raised concerns that the deal could allow imports produced under less stringent environmental and health regulations.
The ban takes effect immediately and will apply to all countries exporting food products to France. Officials said enforcement would be carried out through border checks and routine inspections.
France has been one of the strongest critics of the Mercosur agreement, citing environmental, health, and competitiveness concerns, particularly in the agricultural sector.
