Worker cost-of-living, salaries under scrutiny as new tariffs take effect

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) have agreed to monitor the impact of electricity and water tariff adjustments on workers following the announcement of the 2026-2030 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

The MYTO, which takes effect on 1 January 2026, outlines planned tariff changes for electricity and water over the next five years.

Meetings between the TUC and PURC were held on 11 and 30 December 2025 to discuss potential effects on workers’ living standards, sector stability, and investments in the energy and water sectors.

In a joint statement, PURC said any reversal of the tariff order could affect the commission’s independence and undermine stability in the energy and water sectors, as well as the broader economy.

The commission also committed to considering worker concerns during the next tariff review window.

The TUC said it would continue monitoring the impact of the new tariffs on salaries and wages, and would engage the government regarding the adequacy of current wage levels in relation to cost-of-living pressures.

The discussions were described as a step toward sustained dialogue and collaboration between labor and regulators, aimed at ensuring that tariff decisions balance sector stability, affordability, and the welfare of Ghanaian workers.

The joint statement was signed in Accra on 30 December 2025 by TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah and PURC Executive Secretary Shafic Suleman.
