The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has disclosed the reasons behind the reshuffle that saw Tamale South Member of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu removed from his position as Minority Leader ahead of the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the decision formed part of a broader strategy by the party leadership to reposition the NDC for electoral victory.
Speaking during his “Thank You” tour in the Tamale South Constituency in the Northern Region, Asiedu Nketiah explained that the changes made within the party’s front-line leadership were carefully planned to strengthen the NDC’s campaign machinery and improve its chances in the elections.
He stressed that the reshuffle was not targeted at any individual but was intended to serve the collective interest of the party.
The NDC Chairman further revealed that the President and then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama did not initially agree with the decision to reshuffle Haruna Iddrisu and other leaders in Parliament.
However, he insisted that as National Chairman, he had to take difficult decisions he believed would benefit the party in the long term. He maintained that leadership sometimes requires bold actions even in the face of opposition.
Asiedu Nketiah noted that the outcome of the 2024 elections had vindicated the party’s strategy, adding that the NDC’s victory demonstrated that the leadership changes were necessary. He called on party supporters to remain united and continue supporting the leadership as the party works towards fulfilling its promises to the Ghanaian people.
