The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has warned that vegetation interference along transmission corridors and customers exceeding approved electricity loads are major causes of recent power outages and can increase fire risk in homes and businesses.
Speaking at a media engagement at the Ketan Bulk Supply Point, Western Regional Manager Eng. Emmanuel J. Ofori explained how power is transmitted from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) through Bulk Supply Points (BSPs) and primary substations before being stepped down for consumers.
Eng. Ofori said dense vegetation, particularly in difficult terrain, often brings trees and bamboo into contact with power lines during storms.
These contacts cause faults and automatic shutdowns to protect the network.
To reduce incidents, ECG conducts routine vegetation control exercises and engages contractors annually especially before the rainy season to clear growth along power-line corridors.
The regional manager also cautioned that customers who exceed their approved electricity load without notifying ECG increase the likelihood of electrical faults and fires.
He urged consumers to report load increases so ECG can adjust supply and connections accordingly.
Targeted upgrade to ease overload at Bogoso BSP,
Eng. Ofori identified overloading at the Bogoso Bulk Supply Point which serves Bogoso, Asankrangwa and surrounding communities as a contributor to unstable supply in parts of the Amenfi East and Amenfi West districts.
ECG is constructing a new line from the Prestea BSP to the Bogoso BSP to ease pressure and improve reliability; the project is expected to be completed within one month.
Customers who have added significant electrical equipment or who suspect their connection may be overloaded should contact ECG’s Western Region office or submit a load-change request via ECG’s official website.
