NPP’s Miracles Aboagye alleges “persecution” over NIB detention of former official, threatens protests

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Team Lead of The People’s Forum and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the government of political persecution following the arrest and alleged detention of a former chief executive officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), warning of nationwide protests if the official is not released promptly.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (11 February), Aboagye claimed the official voluntarily honoured an invitation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to assist with investigations into allegations relating to a scholarship scheme, but was later detained under what he described as questionable circumstances.

According to him, the official was subsequently escorted home by heavily armed officers, where his residence was searched before he was taken away to an undisclosed location.

“As we speak, even his lawyers do not know where he is,” Aboagye said. “This is quite crude. These are things that used to happen in the 80s. We cannot have a situation where people are arrested and detained without due process.”

He argued that if investigators had concerns, the appropriate step would be to charge the individual and present him before a court rather than hold him incommunicado.

“If they have any issue, arraign him before court and let the laws deal with him. But you don’t ransack his home and detain him overnight in an unknown location,” he added.

Aboagye further alleged that the action was intended to distract public attention from mounting economic challenges, particularly difficulties facing cocoa farmers, teachers and nurses.

He described the development as damaging to public trust in the security services and warned that the opposition would not remain silent.

“We are going to protest, and we are going to protest aggressively,” he said. “Democracy allows opposing voices. We will not sit back.”

He said the party expects clarity on the official’s whereabouts by midday, failing which further action would be taken.

Government and the NIB have not publicly responded to the claims.
