Kobby Amoah Esq, a special aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, has described the party’s flagbearer contest as unusually intense and markedly different from previous internal primaries.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (28 January) ahead of the primaries, Amoah said the race has shifted away from traditional internal party considerations to broader national concerns, as aspirants seek to align themselves with issues important to the general Ghanaian electorate.
“In previous NPP primaries, it was largely about internal party dynamics,” he said. “This time, the candidates are looking beyond the party base to what Ghanaians are actually looking for in a leader.”
He identified Kennedy Agyapong, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen’s ally Bryan Acheampong, and former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the three strongest contenders, noting that debates around party history, leadership style and the causes of the NPP’s recent electoral defeat have dominated the campaign.
Amoah acknowledged that the race has been heated, with some acrimony among camps, but said the disagreements stem largely from divergent interpretations of party history, data, and lessons from the NPP’s worst electoral defeat in recent times.
He added that the contest has drawn scrutiny from political analysts, given that it is taking place barely a year after the party’s loss in the last general election.
