As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its 31 January presidential primaries, Bryan Acheampong has emerged as one of the most compelling contenders for the party’s flagbearer position.
While many Ghanaians recognise his name from politics and public service, there are aspects of his background and achievements that remain less familiar to the wider public.
Here are five things you probably didn’t know about Bryan Acheampong:
1. He has an exceptionally diverse academic and professional background
Acheampong holds an extensive and varied academic resume, including degrees from institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom. He earned his bachelor’s and MBA in Business Management from Johnson and Wales University in the US, and holds multiple advanced degrees — including a Master of Professional Studies in Applied Intelligence from Georgetown University and a Master of Arts in Security and Intelligence from the University of Leicester.
He is also a PhD candidate in Information Systems at the University of Ghana Business School and holds professional certificates from places like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
2. He served in the United States Air Force
Before rising in Ghanaian politics, Bryan Acheampong served in the United States Air Force, where he received training in areas such as anti-terrorism, force protection and conventional defence. This military experience added a security and discipline dimension to his later work in public service and governance.
3. He has held multiple key government portfolios
Acheampong’s public service career spans several major ministries. He has served as Minister of State at the Office of the President, Minister of State at the Ministry of Interior, and as Minister for Food and Agriculture, where he championed initiatives like Planting for Food and Jobs 2.0 to modernise Ghana’s agricultural sector. He has also chaired the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee and sat on other key committees, reflecting his wide governance experience.
4. His philanthropic work spans health, education and livelihoods
Beyond politics, Acheampong’s social impact extends through the Bryan Acheampong Foundation (BAF), which invests millions of cedis annually in community development. The foundation has provided scholarships, supported thousands with NHIS registration, assisted pregnant women and infants, drilled boreholes, trained young people in vocational skills and supported women’s cooperatives, among other interventions.
5. He commands grassroots support across regions
Acheampong has drawn notable backing from various civil society groups, particularly the youth. In October 2025, youth leaders in the Ashanti Region publicly endorsed him, praising his track record in agriculture, rural empowerment and job creation, and describing him as the “unifier and doer” Ghana needs.
