Linda Ocloo orders livestock traders to vacate Kanda Mosque area by 30 May

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has assured that livestock trading activities near the Kanda National Mosque will be cleared by Saturday, 30 May, following concerns over sanitation and congestion in the area.

The temporary market emerged ahead of the Eid al-Adha festivities, as traders moved in to meet increased demand for livestock. However, the development drew scrutiny from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which raised concerns about its impact on urban order and environmental sanitation.

Speaking during an engagement with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the media, Ocloo said authorities had engaged stakeholders and granted a short grace period for traders to wind down operations.

“Honestly speaking we gave them up till Friday, so hopefully we can assure you that by Saturday, the place will be cleared,” she said.

The minister explained that opinion leaders had appealed for additional time to allow traders to conclude their activities, prompting authorities to adopt a phased approach rather than immediate eviction.

“We met the opinion leaders and they pleaded with us,” she added.

Ocloo stressed that the arrangement was strictly temporary and that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence during future festive periods.

She disclosed that directives had been issued to local authorities to identify more suitable locations for such seasonal trading activities.

“We have also directed the MCE that next time, they should find a nice place for them to display their livestock,” she said.

The minister further indicated that she would personally visit the site with her team to ensure compliance with the agreed timeline.

“Myself and the team will visit the place tomorrow to see if they will honour their pledge. We will make sure that the place comes back to its normal state,” she said.

Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to maintain sanitation standards and restore order in key parts of the capital.
