Xenophobic attacks: Ghana government summons South African Envoy over incidents

Ghana has officially registered its protest with South Africa after a Ghanaian national was harassed in KwaZulu-Natal and told to “fix his country.”

On 23 April 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, over a string of xenophobic incidents caught on viral video. The footage shows foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, being intimidated and harassed, with some now advised to stay indoors for safety.

Ablakwa cited a recent case where a Ghanaian lawyer was confronted and asked to prove his legal status before being ordered to leave South Africa.

“Such conduct undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals,” he said, warning that past episodes have led to loss of life and property.

While no fatalities have been reported this time, the Minister stressed that the attacks go against African solidarity and Ghana’s historical support for South Africa’s liberation struggle. He called for immediate protection of Ghanaians there and firm assurances that it won’t happen again.

However, the South Africa has responded, saying it’s taking the matter seriously. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged Ghana’s concerns and assured that Pretoria is working to restore calm.
Law enforcement is monitoring the situation closely and will hold those responsible accountable.

The Ghanaian government says it remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad and will keep engaging South African authorities to ensure their safety.
