An aspiring General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sylvester Tetteh, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state institutions and law enforcement tactics to intimidate political opponents and suppress dissent.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (22 April), Tetteh claimed recent arrests and prosecutions reflect a broader pattern of political control rather than adherence to due process.
“The DNA of the NDC is premised on violence… they put fear in people to cow everybody into submission,” he alleged.
He cited the arrest and transfer of a party communicator from Sunyani to Accra as an example of what he described as excessive use of state power.
“You bring somebody from Sunyani to Accra, handcuffed, and put him before a circuit court… don’t they have courts in Sunyani?” he questioned.
Tetteh argued that such actions contradict Ghana’s legal framework, especially following the repeal of criminal libel laws, insisting that civil remedies—not arrests—should govern offensive speech cases.
He further criticised what he described as selective justice and media trials, referencing the conduct of the Attorney-General and ongoing anti-corruption prosecutions.
“They started by doing public prosecution in the media… now they’ve realised the heat and have stopped,” he said.
Although he did not directly name the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), his comments suggested concern about the broader anti-corruption environment and its perceived politicisation.
Tetteh maintained that the NPP must adopt a more aggressive political communication strategy to counter what he called “dark spots” within the NDC administration.
“When you are dealing with the devil, you must do so with a long spoon,” he said, signalling a more confrontational opposition posture if elected.
He concluded that defending civil liberties and exposing alleged abuses of power would be central to his leadership approach as General Secretary.
