NPP accuses Mahama of intolerance, raises concerns over shrinking democratic space

Addressing the media at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Kodua Frimpong alleged that the current administration has become increasingly hostile to criticism, citing recent arrests and detentions of opposition figures.

“Let it be on record that the NDC government led by President Mahama has become so intolerable to the extent that it does not welcome divergence or criticism,” he said.

He argued that Ghana operates under a constitutional democracy that guarantees freedom of expression, stressing that citizens must be allowed to voice opinions even when they are uncomfortable for those in power.

Kodua Frimpong contrasted the current situation with what he described as the more tolerant posture of the previous administration under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice, Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), including President Mahama, subjected the Akufo-Addo government to harsh and sometimes offensive criticism, yet the administration allowed such expressions in line with constitutional principles.

“Our government was tolerant because we understood that we were being governed by the constitution and the rule of law,” he said.

The NPP General Secretary further claimed that several individuals have recently been arrested and detained without being promptly arraigned before court, raising concerns about due process and civil liberties.

He called on authorities to uphold democratic values, protect freedom of speech, and ensure that all citizens—regardless of political affiliation—are treated fairly under the law.

The comments add to growing political tensions between the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress, as debates intensify over governance, accountability, and the state of Ghana’s democracy.
