Miss Diaspora Ghana 2026 launched to drive diaspora-led development and women empowerment

The 2026 edition of Miss Diaspora Ghana has been officially launched, with organisers positioning the pageant as a development-focused platform aimed at empowering young women and strengthening Ghana’s ties with its global diaspora.

The launch event, held on Thursday, 9 April at the Accra City Hotel, brought together government officials, traditional leaders, tourism stakeholders, and development partners.

Chief Executive Officer of Nubian Crown Company Limited and founder of the initiative, Yvonne Eyram Kofigah, said the platform goes beyond beauty to focus on impact, leadership, and national development.

“Miss Diaspora Ghana is not about how the would-be queens look, but about the difference they can make,” she said. “The crown represents responsibility, leadership, and impact.”

Kofigah explained that the initiative was designed to reconnect women of African descent in the diaspora with their roots while translating that connection into tangible contributions to Ghana’s development.

Drawing from her own experience as a former pageant contestant, she noted that pageantry can serve as a powerful tool for influence and social change.

Focus on community development

As part of its flagship intervention, the winner of Miss Diaspora Ghana 2026 will spearhead a community project on the Akuapem Ridge under the leadership of Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III.

The project will focus on establishing a vocational and skills development centre, with emphasis on cassava processing, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods for young people and women.

According to Kofigah, the long-term goal is to create a hub for mentorship, small business development, and diaspora investment.

Tourism and diaspora investment

Director of the Ghana Tourism Development CompanyKobby Mensah, described the initiative as aligned with Ghana’s broader tourism and economic strategy.

He highlighted new digital platforms such as the Ghana Tourism Marketplace, designed to connect local businesses to global markets, and the Ghana Tourism Investment Platform, which enables diaspora participation in tourism-related projects.

“Tourism must go beyond promotion to creating opportunities, empowering youth, and transforming communities,” he said.

Economic empowerment and industry growth

Chief Executive Officer of Ghana EXIM BankSylvester Adinam Mensah, emphasised the importance of youth empowerment and industrialisation.

He noted that Ghana’s economic transformation depends on deliberate investment in skills, entrepreneurship, and value addition.

“Miss Diaspora Ghana represents a platform for identity, empowerment, enterprise, and community impact,” he said. “It challenges us to focus on purpose, not just appearance.”

Diaspora as a strategic asset

Deputy Director at the Diaspora Affairs Office, Nana Kyere Agyeman, described the diaspora as a central pillar of Ghana’s development.

He revealed that remittances from Ghanaians abroad exceed $7 billion annually and stressed the need to harness diaspora resources more strategically, particularly within the tourism sector.

“This pageant creates ambassadors who will connect Ghana to the global stage, driving investment, cultural exchange, and national pride,” he said.

Strengthening Ghana’s global tourism position

Representing the Ghana Tourism Authority, Benjamin Anane-Nsiah said initiatives like Miss Diaspora Ghana complement national efforts such as the Year of Return and Black Star Experience.

He noted that diaspora women continue to play a significant role in shaping Ghana’s global narrative and promoting cultural diplomacy.

“Programmes like this empower young women, promote cultural pride, and inspire a new generation to represent Ghana on the global stage,” he said.

A platform beyond the crown

Organisers say the theme for the 2026 edition, “Beyond the Crown: Empowering Youth, Building Industries, Transforming Communities,” reflects a deliberate shift toward impact-driven pageantry.

As preparations begin for the competition, stakeholders are calling for increased collaboration between government, the private sector, and the diaspora to sustain the initiative.

Kofigah concluded with a call to action, “Let us go beyond the crown and focus on what truly matters—building opportunities that will outlive this moment and creating change that will be felt for years to come.”
