KMA bans sale of explosives at Kejetia Market, traders must comply by 1 March

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced an immediate ban on sale of combustible items at the Kejetia Market Complex, citing persistent fire risks at the busy commercial hub.

The decision was taken by the city’s Metro Security Council and takes effect immediately through March 1, according to the Kumasi mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi.

“The metro security council has taken a decision we are banning all combustible items at the Kejetia Market Complex. They are to move their items,” Boadi told reporters.

He said enforcement would be stepped up from next week, with joint security operations to ensure compliance.

“From Monday we will deploy a team of military and policemen to make sure we seize such items. And it is giving us so much problems as far as fire is concerned, so we are with immediate effect taking this step…It is the same activity that brought about the fire incident four years ago.

“We will ask all of them to come and meet the metro fire officer at KMA tomorrow. We are moving all of them immediately to Racecourse”, he added.

Kejetia Market, one of West Africa’s largest open markets, has in the past experienced fire outbreaks that disrupted trading and caused losses to traders.

City authorities say the latest measures are aimed at preventing future incidents and improving safety at the complex.

Traders affected by the directive have been asked to relocate prohibited items as officials prepare for intensified enforcement in the coming days.
