Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, says Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent victory in the NPP flagbearer primaries reflects not only delegate support but also growing grassroots favorability.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (3 January), Zaato noted that Bawumia’s likability among party members has surged to 92 percent, a substantial increase compared to his standing in the 2020 elections.
This high approval, he argued, could motivate volunteers and donors to actively support the upcoming campaign.
Zaato highlighted the importance of engagement with voters beyond the ballot box. “Whenever delegates saw him up close, interacted with him, or attended his events, their support increased,” he said, adding that such personal contact is vital for political consolidation.
The analyst also stressed the strategic element of selecting a running mate, suggesting that Bawumia now has the luxury to carefully consider options.
“Time is a key asset,” he said. “He can consult, commission studies, and gauge grassroots preferences before making any decision.”
Zaato concluded that while the primaries resolved a major internal challenge for the NPP, ongoing reconciliation and strategic outreach remain crucial for the party’s competitiveness in the 2028 general elections.
