The campaign team for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer contender Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says that the outcome of the presidential primary on 31 January, not opinion polls, will determine his political fortunes.
Campaign spokesperson, Yaw Opoku Mensah, speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (24 January) was responding to recent surveys suggesting former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was leading the race.
Mensah emphasized that while polls, psychological assessments, and research provide indicators, the “real data” comes from the votes cast by delegates.
“The ultimate affirmation we are waiting for is what will happen on 31 January—that is the real data we are looking for,” Mensah said.
The Adutwum factor
He highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding Dr. Adutwum during campaign visits across constituencies in the Ashanti Region, describing the energy and engagement of delegates as the “Adutwum factor.”
According to Mensah, the candidate’s presentations focus on his record in government, the party’s strategic priorities, and balancing Ghanaian expectations with what the party stands to gain.
“Politics is a tool to make society better,” Mensah added. “If we are able to put ourselves into that wheel, the decisions we make are critical—they can make or unmake us. That is why political actors must focus on principles and understand the environment of the 21st century.”
Delegates’ favourite
He said delegates’ decisions will ultimately reflect both Dr. Adutwum’s achievements and the broader expectations of Ghanaians, underscoring the importance of the upcoming internal vote for shaping the NPP’s direction ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP is set to hold its internal election at the end of January, with delegates from across the country responsible for selecting the candidate capable of unifying the party and presenting a credible platform to voters.
