President John Dramani Mahama is reportedly unlikely to attend this year’s Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) congress following a court injunction that has suspended the organization’s national elections.
The elections, originally scheduled for 7 January 2026, were halted after Charles Kwabena Amponsah, a teacher at Asare Bediako Senior High School and candidate for GNAT’s National Presidency, filed a legal challenge.
Amponsah cited alleged breaches of the GNAT Constitution, procedural irregularities, and concerns over the credibility of the delegates’ register.
He claimed that some delegates for regional and national conferences had been handpicked by regional executives, including the Ashanti Regional Chairman, rather than elected through proper constitutional channels, creating an uneven playing field.
The court granted an interlocutory injunction, effectively suspending the elections until the substantive issues are resolved.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on 15 January 2026.
Court documents show that GNAT was formally served through its registry officer, but several senior officials—including National President Rev. Isaac Owusu, General Secretary Thomas Musah, and Elections Committee Chairman Mahmoud Issah Zakary—had not yet received service.
This year’s GNAT congress, expected to be held at the University of Professional Studies in Accra is under the theme: Education and development: the GES@50: Reflecting, Reviewing, Revising and Growing the profession and the unions.
